Sleepy was the best dwarf
There is no more powerful performance enhancer than a good night’s sleep. Conversely, lack of sleep, whether duration or quality, will limit your cognitive horsepower and compromise your Agency.
Breaking burnout
The sources of burnout are known and can be countered through the purposeful exercise of Agency. Paradoxically, the answer is not less work or “quiet quitting” — it is the embrace of challenge and impact.
The original blueprint
This is the source document that kicked off the podcast, Jon and Patrick’s original blueprint for Optimal Agency. A fully searchable and indexed PDF, it contains write ups of every Rule, Behavior, and Meta Rule for building your health, wealth, and time.
Defend your time
If you make your time valuable, limited, and highly productive, you gain the right to defend it from interruption by others — keeping your “main thing your main thing” and reducing stress in the bargain.
Political intelligence
As we move into an election year in the United States, we’re bombarded with partisan messages — what to believe, how to feel, the fuzzily-identified “them” who would destroy our way of life. Instead of accepting these arguments at face value, we must take responsibility for understanding and evaluating the issues.
How I invest
Joining the investor class is the fastest route to Wealth — and freedom from a life spent pursuing someone else’s goals. Once you’re debt-free and have adequate cash savings (6 to 12 months of expenses), it’s time to begin your investing journey. Below, how I do it.
Cash laziness tax
There’s a “laziness tax” inherent in leaving your cash in low-yielding checking and savings accounts — the bank is lending out your money at high rates while paying you next to nothing. With a few clicks and a few minutes, you can ensure you’re receiving the best returns available (while enjoying the schadenfreude of reducing your bank’s undeserved profit margin). Here's how...
Zombie no more
5 filters to determine if you’re using your phone, television and laptop to your advantage (or if you’ve been pulled into the common trap of zombie-like media consumption).
The world is clay
Agency is the act of shaping the world to your liking, building the life you want to live. As in navigation, it’s hard to get where you’re going if you don’t know the destination — so you must articulate a detailed vision for your future world.
Advice I’d give myself
Ever notice your problems are sticky and difficult, while those of others are simple and easily solved? We can take advantage of this phenomenon by shifting our perspective, taking a third-party view of our personal lives to provide logical, emotion-free solutions to the issues that vex us most.
Eliminating the knowing-doing gap
Narrowing the gap between your actions and your values is a sure path to serenity and life satisfaction. When what you do and who you want to be are in accordance, you will no longer experience the chronic stress of misaligned thoughts and actions.
100 HWT Scores
Optimal Agency’s HWT Questionnaire is meant to show you where you have the most runway to improve your personal freedom (whether Health, Wealth, or Time) — and if you’re going to alter your life based on advice from an online questionnaire, you ought to know a few things about it.
Priority hawk
Prioritization is hard when everything seems important. With just a few minutes of work, you can carve this universe of possibility down into a manageable list — creating an actionable framework for minimizing stress (and maximizing Agency) for the next three months.
A friend indeed
There is no stronger predictor of health than social connection, yet we often fail to prioritize friendship in the face of life’s more urgent demands. Rejecting this unfortunate order, we’ll put our friendships first, recognizing the extraordinary power of fellowship to create a joyful (and long-lived) existence.
Somebody you should know
There is a select group of thinkers influencing the ideas we present each week — each of whom deserves a little bit of your attention. Check out the (necessarily partial) list below, pick a few to explore, and expand your knowledge of Health, Wealth, and Time.
Work less better
When you spend less time working you’ll open up possibilities — to do nothing, to be inspired, to take better care of yourself and others, to find your next great pursuit. This is not an optional practice. Rather, it is the seed of Agency and a life of Impact, and you should act accordingly.
Parkison’s Law
Parkinson’s Law tells us we will use 100% of any available resource — given 7 days to complete a project we will use 7 days, given $10,000 to remodel the kitchen we will use $10,000. You can use this Law to your advantage by imposing radical constraints on your activities, forcing yourself to generate the desired outcome with extreme efficiency (while saving the time you didn’t spend for use on other, more fulfilling activities).
